Day 14 – What’s in a name?

A rose by any other name is still a rose.

“At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord” Genesis 4:26

“Listen! You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus.” Luke 1:31

“She will give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Jesus, His name means Jehovah is salvation. He has been called many names, but each name is just another facet of His character.

Beginning at the third generation of men, at the time Seth became the father of Enosh, people began to call on the name of the Lord. The word “call” in Hebrew is “qara.” It means to cry out, to shout or speak out. It means to proclaim. Qara often describes calling out loudly in an attempt to get someone’s attention.

Can’t you picture the scene in Genesis 4:26 as Seth and his family gather to shout out the name of the Lord.

We don’t have to shout out God’s name to get Him to hear us. God bends His ear to listen the moment anyone whispers His name. The shout is for us. The cry is for our benefit and the communal unity of calling upon the name of the Lord is to make the powers and principalities of the evil realm quiver and shake at the name of Jesus.

His name is power. It is a name that is above all other names, and God told Mary and Joseph to give His Son this powerful name. In John chapter 17 verse 11, Jesus prays, “Holy Father, keep them safe by the power of Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they will be one, just as You and I are one.”

The name of Jesus contains power enough to keep us safe from evil.

What is the name you are clinging to this season?

Why not proclaim it loud enough to make the nations tremble?

Jesus – Jehovah saves

Emmanuel – God with us

Wonderful Counseor

Mighty God – God is our Hero

Everlasting Father

Prince of Peace

Jehovah Rophe – God is our healer

Jehovah Jireh – God is our Provider

Yahweh Shammah – God lives with us

The names of God

The names of Jesus

The list is long and distinguished because the mighty character of God is too great for just one name.

What do you call Your God and Your King?

I hope you are enjoying your journey through Advent as you read along in the book, “Through Their Eyes.”

This post is from day 14. We are actually on Day 16 of Advent 2016. That will be posted later today. I just couldn’t skip day 14 and the name of Jesus.

“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There’s just something about that name. Master, Savior, Jesus, Like the fragrance after the rain. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Leta all heaven and earth proclaim. Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but there’s something about that name.”

“There’s Something about that name” by Bill Gaither
