What we will see!

“Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.””

Nathaniel had just experienced the Supernatural Knowledge of God.  Jesus told Nathaneal something about himself that Jesus couldn’t have possibly known.  No human can see further than their horizon, but Jesus had seen Nathanael even when Nathanael wastn’t in His line of sight.  That amazed Nathanael.  This knowledge confirmed in Nathanael’s mind that, “Teacher, You are the Son of God!  You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus asked Nathanael, “Because I said to you, I saw you beneath the fig tree, do you believe in and rely on and trust in Me?”

Now Jesus tells him, “Very truly,”. The King James Version says, “Verily, Verily, I say to you.”  I love that Jesus speaks this word twice.  It is a good parenting technique.  When you want your child to understand a certain principle or a drastic outcome that may happen if they didn’t follow certain guidelines, you needed to speak it to them once, and then repeat it, and just for good measure tell it to them again the third time.  My son once asked me why I did this.  I replied, “Because obviously you did not hear me the first time.”  That is what we read in verse 51.  Jesus it’s starting to state a fact, but it is like He wants to gain Nathaniel’s full attention before He ever gets started.  “Listen up now!”  “Truly, Truly…”  This is what you are going to see.  Amen and so be it.  Jesus says to all these men before him, “This is what you are going to see.”

You will see the heaven opened.  The prophet Isaiah once cried out to God in Isaiah 64, “Oh, that You would rend the heavens and that You would come down,”. God has done that.  God has answered Isaiah’s plea.  When Jesus came up out of the baptismal waters, he looked up at the sky and saw the heaven opened and the Spirit of God descend on Him in the form of a dove.  God has answered Isaiah’s prayer.  Jesus, Son of God came down to us!  Psalms 78:23-24 talks of a time when God commanded the clouds to separate and He opened up the doors of heaven, then He rained down manna for the hungry Israelites to eat.  They ate from heaven’s grain.  Jesus is saying this is what we are all going to see.  We will see the heavens opened.  We will experience God’s favor and His nourishment from heaven.  Don’t we all have this longing deep in our hearts.  It is the eternity seed striving to blossom in our lives.  Just like Isaiah cried, “Open up the heavens and come down.”  We all long for the One who created us to come down and nourish our dry parched souls.

We have seen it. God sent His Son once so that we can find favor with God. We can receive God’s favor through Jesus.  Jesus is the stairway that leads up to the very Throne Room of God.  The Angels of God descended and ascended on Jesus on more that one occasion.  He had them at His beck and call.

Jesus is coming back.

“And the sky rolled up like a scroll and vanished, and every mountain and island was dislodged from its place.”

We will see this.  It has happened before.  It will happen again.
