IT IS FINISHED

“Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
‭‭John‬ ‭19:28-30‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last. When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent. ” And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow. But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭23:44-49‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”

And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!” Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph ), and Salome. They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭15:33-36, 38-41‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.” Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people. The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!” And many women who had come from Galilee with Jesus to care for him were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James and Joseph), and the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭27:45-56‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Four different writers, each recording the same event, but with different viewpoints. John was there at the foot of the cross standing next to Mary the mother of Jesus. Matthew was somewhere trying to be inconspicuous. Luke wrote of this event sometime afterward. He interviewed many of the eyewitnesses. Mark eventually became a traveling companion to Peter. Leading scholars even believe the Last Supper took place in Mark’s home. This leads me to believe he was somewhere in the crowd watching the crucifixion of Jesus The Christ. Maybe he even heard the Roman soldier declare, “This man truly was the Son of God!”

The death of Jesus affected everything and everyone. He didn’t slip quietly into the night. The earth shook, the veil tore, tombs opened, resurrection of the saints happened, and Roman soldiers acknowledged Jesus of the Son of God.

The curtain in the Temple was at least 4 inches thick. Both Matthew and Mark made certain that all of history would remember this veil didn’t tear from bottom to top as it would normally happen. This veil tore from top to bottom forever symbolizing the Jesus’ death gained us access to the very throne of God. Only God could have and would have torn it in a downward fashion. For that is the vantage point of Our Father Who Art in Heaven.

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:14-16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

That’s what the death of Jesus accomplished for us.
