”The next day, when the large crowd who had come to the Passover feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took branches of palm trees [in homage to Him as King] and went out to meet Him, and they began shouting and kept shouting “Hosanna! Blessed (celebrated, praised) is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; just as it is written [in Scripture], “Do not fear, Daughter of Zion; Behold, Your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”“
John 12:12-15 AMP
It was their sign of victory, the waving of palm branches, their Jewish King was riding into Jerusalem. Most of them believed Jesus would overthrow their Roman occupiers, but their perception of victory and Jesus’ real mission were two different realities. He came to conquer their true enemy, the bondage of sin. That’s why just a few short days later, those who heralded Jesus as King would cry, “CRUCIFY, CRUCIFY, CRUCIFY!” Jesus didn’t fit their mold of a Victor. He did not do as they demanded.
I wonder do we do the same? Hail Him King of our lives yet when He doesn’t do as our prayers demand do we cry out in anger, “Why do You not answer me?”
Passion Week, Holy Week 2024 has begun.
Lord rake our hearts. Let us see ourselves in the crowd as You rode into Jerusalem on a humble donkey.
What would we see? Would we see Roman execution crosses lining the hill called Golgotha? Would we see You Jesus riding down the road from The Mount of Olives? Would we see You cross the Kidron Valley and over the ravine where the blood of lambs would flow from Temple sacrifices? Would we hear the pilgrims singing the Psalm of deliverance?
Your Word Oh Lord foretold this triumphal parade thousands of years before because You God are the God who knows all things and sets all events into motion.
”Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.“
Psalm 118:26 ESV
”Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.“
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Join me on this journey through Passion Week as we watch Jesus willingly climb Golgotha’s Hill where His execution loomed. As some have quoted, “Saturday maybe silent but Sunday is a coming!”
Amen
