I’m a GOONIE!
Some of you youngsters may be wondering, “What?” I’m talking about the 1985 classic movie, “The Goonies.” It’s about a group of youngsters who live in a neighborhood called the Goondocks. They are the local outcasts who find a treasure map and some clues that lead to the legendary loot of a 17th century pirate known as “One-Eyed Willie.” During the closing clips, the group stumble into “One-Eyed Willie’s” treasure room. The hideaway seems to go on for eternity, shining with gold and all jewels imaginable. They load themselves up with rubies, diamonds, gold medallions, and jeweled necklaces and bracelets. Each “GOONIE” has pockets and arms stuffed and overflowing with treasure. The youngsters were using it to pay off their town’s debt and save their homes.
”Blessed be the Lord, who DAILY LOADS US WITH BENEFITS, the God of our salvation.” SELAH Psalm 68:19 NKJV
Thus I’m a GOONIE, and so are you if you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior. We also live in the Goondocks and we have loaded ourselves with a debt we cannot pay, but we too have been given a treasure map. It’s called the Bible. God has given us the clues. They point to the cross and the blood that Jesus shed for us. He invites us to walk into the Empty Tomb. It leads the way to God’s Treasure Room.
”So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:16 NLT
God’s throne room extends for eternity. We enter into God’s treasure room with confidence because Jesus has paid our debt. We don’t even have to pick up a single diamond or ruby. Psalm 68:19 says God will load our arms, our pockets, and our lives with His endless treasure, and He does this DAILY! When you and I woke up this morning, God had already loaded us with the treasure we needed for this day!
We’re GOONIES!
This verse ends with one of my favorite words, SELAH. “Pause and calmly think of that!” Amplified Version.
